In Sierra Leone, Unprecedented Event as President Koroma Commissions 40 Buses
It was an epoch-making event at the National Stadium yesterday 2nd February 2012 when, according to the Chairman of the National Privatisation Commission, for the first time in the history of Sierra Leone, the country was seeing forty brand new buses being purchased by the Government to serve the people as commercial means of transportation. The buses which were bought with funds provided by the Government of Sierra Leone through the Sierra Leone Roads Transport Corporation (SLRTC) were officially commissioned by President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.

Umaru Fofana to assist Sierra Leone Police with “Photographic Evidence”
The Sierra Leone Police has called on Mr. Umaru Fofana, BBC Stringer and President of the country’s journalists’ association who doubles as acting Editor of a local tabloid, to provide them with the photograph he claims exists which shows Hon. Tunde Lewally hitting the hand of Councillor-Elect Mohamed Kanu-Mansaray. It can be recalled that Fofana in a publication this week accused the police of having been questioned for not going out to arrest Hon. Tunde Lewally despite, according to Fofana’s report, “persistent allegations with some photographic evidence that Lewally had hit with a chair and broken the arm of the opposition councillor-elect”.

Big Boost for Sierra Leone’s Health Care
The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation this week received a boost of Five Hundred Thousand United State Dollars ($US500,000) worth of medical equipment from an International Non-Governmental Organization, “LEAD Global Inc”, based in the United States of America. Handing over the equipments to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation at the Medical Stores, New England in Freetown, LEAD Global Inc’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Don Osman, said Leadership Empowerment And Development (LEAD) Global Inc, exists to identify, encourage and empower leaders of character to be agents of change and influence in society.

Aziz Carew proudly walked upright with firm steps; on his two physically-fit feet and with an aura of self-confident self-assurance as he entered the Law Courts building yesterday Wednesday 1st February 2012. Carew, the opposition SLPP chairman for Constituency 104 in the capital city, was expecting to commence the Preliminary Investigations of the allegations he faces under Magistrate Komba Kamanda. He is being tried on several counts charges of perpetuating political violence including conspiring to stab and wound several ruling party politicians during a recent Bye-Elections held in his constituency.

In Sierra Leone, City Council Workers Storm State House
Workers of the Freetown City Council (FCC) on Wednesday 1st February 2012 held a peaceful demonstration at State House in Freetown, to register their frustration over issues affecting their welfare and also to invite President Koroma’s immediate attention to these burning issues. Some of the burning issues highlighted by the workers include, but not limited to, non-payment of salaries. The chanting demonstrators stormed State House displaying placards with printed wordings expressing their grievances.

Sierra Leone Voters might not Register for Fear of being Kidnapped
State Prosecution Lawyer Gerald Soyei has yesterday January 31st 2012, told Magistrate Komba Kamanda that the spate of lawlessness in the country needed to be curtailed. He was speaking during the trial of the opposition Councilor-Elect for Freetown Ward 369, Mohamed Kanu-Mansaray and others, when he objected to bail on the grounds that the offense of kidnapping is very serious. Lawyer Soyei said news of kidnapping has widespread potential of derailing the ongoing voter registration process as well as the pending elections process, as voters will be afraid to leave their homes to go and register or go and vote for fear of being kidnapped by political gangsters behaving like wild cowboys.

Sierra Leone Red Cross Clocks 50 Years
Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS) on Tuesday 31st January 2012 launched its 50th Anniversary Celebration on the theme: “Celebrating 50 years of the Power of Humanity”, at the British Council Hall in Freetown. Giving a brief background the fifty years of achievements, the Chairman SLRCS, Celebration Committee Alhaji M.A.T Foday said the SLRCS was established by the House of Parliament in 1962. The Sierra Leone Red Cross, he said, is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Africa and that since its establishment, have contributed to saving lives and humanity.

In Sierra Leone, Women Want Commission - Naasu Fofanah
Gender Specialist at the Sierra Leone Conference on Transformation and Development (SLCDT), Madam Naasu Fofanah has stated that one of the resolutions of the Women of Sierra Leone for the Transformative Conference slated to kick off this morning was a clarion call for the Government of Sierra Leone to establish a “Women’s Commission” that will promote the advancement of women and girls in Sierra Leone. Madam Fofanah was amongst several women who made this call during the women’s vigil held at the Miatta Conference Hall Car Park in Freetown on Sunday 29th January 2012 to mark the commencement of the SLCDT slated to commence on 30th January and expected to end on 1st February 2012.

In Sierra Leone, ENCISS Reveals Deadline for Grants
ENCISS has announced February 21, 2012 as deadline date for the submission of expression of interest forms for this year’s grants. This announcement was made during the launch of ENCISS grant application form at the British Council Hall in Freetown on Friday 27th January 2012. The grant is intended to support projects and programmes for youths, local development, gender, 2012 elections and justice and security respectively. The keynote speaker for the launch Mr. Kabba Franklyn Bangura said ENCISS is a Non-Governmental Organization that seeks to strengthen the relationship between state and non-state actors. He said ENCISS grant support programme has contributed immensely in changing the lives of thousands of poor families in Sierra Leone. The vision of ENCISS as revealed by the Country Manager, Jean Kamara, is to see an active and engaged civil society in Sierra Leone.

In Sierra Leone, NRA Celebrates World Customs Day
The National Revenue Authority (NRA), through its Customs and Excise Department on Wednesday 26th January joined the world in celebrating ‘World Customs Day’ at the Customs House in Freetown. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Border Divide-Customs Connect”. The Minister of Trade and Industry Dr. Richard Conteh said Customs is a key tool in the revenue generation of any country. Minister Conteh revealed that Sierra Leone is now ranked 6th in the world and 1st in West Africa in terms of ease of doing business. He said such achievement is partly as a result of the effective work of Customs.

Sierra Leone Police OKs 763 Personnel
Sierra Leone Police (SLP) over the weekend approved seven hundred and sixty-three (763) police personnel. The newly approved personnel including one hundred and ninety (190) female and five hundred and seventy-three male have completed three months of intensive training at the Police Training Center in Hasting. Addressing the gathering, Vice President Alhaji Samuel Sam Sumana who represented President Koroma, congratulated the personnel for passing out as good police men and women. He assured of Government’s support while they would be in service and called on the officers to put all their best into their various duties aimed at the protection of lives and properties.

In Sierra Leone, Bank Governor confirms Currency Shortage in December
The Governor, Bank of Sierra Leone (BSL) Mr. Sheku Sambadeen Sesay has now officially confirmed to the nation that there was indeed a temporal shortage of currency in some commercial banks across the country during the festive period last year although not all the banks were affected. Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SLIEPA), over the weekend held a roundtable discussion geared towards engendering an inclusive relationship between SLIEPA and the country’s indigenous private sector.
