Photographs of Sierra Leone's Yenga taken for the first time in 17 years
....Accompanied by a high-powered police delegation from the Police Division in war-devastated Koindu, Sierra Leone’s award-winning journalist Sylvia Olayinka Blyden was amazingly able to persuade the usually belligerent Guinean soldiers to take photographs with her and her team of journalists. It can be easily recalled that for the last 17 years, attempts by anyone to take photographs inside Yenga had been met with very stiff resistance from the Guinean soldiers forcibly stationed there. Infact, a diplomatic furore had occurred five years ago (in 2006) when a United Nations team had been subjected to physical assault when it attempted to take photographs inside Yenga. The U.N. personnel had fled for their lives but not without the Guinean soldiers first breaking the limbs of the journalist who had accompanied the U.N. team.

Julius Maada Bio with Plaster on his head inside Sierra Leone's Bo Coronation Field
Awareness Times has been able to extract from a Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation television programme, the first set of photographs of SLPP Presidential Nominee Julius Maada Bio as videotaped by SLBC TV crew at the Bo City Coronation Field on Friday. Contrary to initial reports, there is absolutely no damage to Maada Bio’s face. Rather, he appears with a huge plaster right over the top of his partly shaven head. The programme in which the video shots of Maada Bio were aired was that of the Publisher of Awareness Times giving her analysis to the Nation of what happened in Bo. It was a Live Discussion programme. At the end of the Discussion, Dr. Blyden has made three summarised points to the people of Sierra Leone. Firstly that the Government and Police are continuing to show a limited understanding of the seriousness of what is brewing in the political landscape. Secondly, that Julius Maada Bio has showed a worrying lack of leadership by failing to make a Statement to the Nation, well over 48 hours since arson, murder and extreme violence rocked Bo City in reaction to events surrounding his very person. She opines that Silence means Acquiescence and finally, Dr. Blyden has made a call for President Koroma to release the Report of the Shears-Moses Commission of Enquiry into the March 2009 political violence between the APC and SLPP in Freetown, Pujehun and Kenema and for all the recommendations therein to be implemented swiftly. All photo snapshots captured from SLBC TV, can be seen by clicking the link above.

Meet Sierra Leone Police’s “Murder Suspects” in Case of the Murdered Journalist
Very Senior Police officers have confided that the Sierra Leone Police has found not even a scrap of evidence to justify or warrant the detentions and torture these bonafide citizens suffered. Meanwhile, my team of journalists who were yesterday at the CID Police scene as these victims were forced to crawl out of their police cells like lizards, (their crutches, callipers had been seized by police and are nowhere to be found now!), is going to ensure that we keep the pressure on until an Independent Enquiry is set up, hopefully by Human Rights Commission, to find out how come something like this could happen in Modern Day Sierra Leone.
