As the celebration of t International Women's Day wrapped up, women representing various women's groups and organizations in Sierra Leone yesterday Monday 8th Man 2010 held a peaceful demonstration to various ministries and along the major streets of Freetown demanding for the government of Sierra Leone to give them a 30% Quota in government and governance.
The demonstration was rallied around the theme "Equal Rights Equal opportunity, Progress for All".
The motive for this year’s celebration was to reflect on challenges faced by women all over the world for which they have been forced to demand 30' quota in leadership positions.
The President of the Mono River Women Peace Network (MARWOPNET) Madam Yasmin Jusu-Sheriff who also represents the Women's Solidarity Support Group (WSSG) speaking in forum held with Minister of Transport and Aviation Hon. Alit Pal-Sowe at the Ministerial Building on George Street, said that the 30% quota which they are asking for is to help women t participate fearlessly in order to improve their chances of getting into leadership position. She cited certain Sections of the Sierra Leone Constitution which she said were discriminatory to women and should be expunged. She also said that, the Truth an Reconciliation Commission (T.R.C.) had made several good recommendations for the implementation of the 30% quota in the constitution and that President Ernest Bai Koroma has assured them that he will review the constitution but they are still to receive any positive repot from the government. While emphasizing for the' review of the constitution Madam Jusu Sheriff said noted that Sierra Leone needs constitutional change and attitudinal change.
President of the 50-50 Group of Sierra Leone, Madam Hariatu Turay said, they need this quota to have space in leadership position.
In response, the Minister of Transport and Aviation Hon. Alieu Momodu Pat-Sowe said, women do not only need quota but equal share in all aspect of life. While giving examples of women in leadership positions in the country, he said women should continue to fight for their rights instead of just a quota. He however assured the women of his continuing support to their fight until something is done to answer their call.
