The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has boosted the Ministry of Education Youths and Sports (MEYS) with a donation worth US$.336,000 (three hundred and thirty-six thousand United States Dollars). On Monday 8th March 2010, the UNICEF Country Representative in Sierra Leone Mahimbo Mdoe on behalf of UNICEF handed over five vehicles and eighteen motorbikes to the ministry at a ceremony held at the UNICEF Medical Store, New England Ville in Freetown.
According to Mr. Mdoe, the donation is aimed at helping in the facilitation of monitoring and supervising process of basic education programmes across the country. He said the donation is also designed to help boost_and_improve the educational standard in Sierra Leone. Mr. Mdoe furthered that the vehicles and motor bikes will contribute
significantly in boosting government's capacity on education, help in the provision of quality basic education and above all enhances the capacity of Teachers and Education Officials in meeting the MDG bench marks. He emphasized that the vehicles are expected to be used in monitoring and supervising the basic education programmes in Bo, Moyamba, Port Loko, Kailahun and in the Western Area, while pointing out that the motorbikes are expected to be used in monitoring distance educational processes in Port Loko, Kambia, Moyamba, Pujehun, Bonthe, Tonkolili. Koinadugu. Bombali. Kailahun,and Kono respectively.
The Country Representative went on that UNICEF is collaborating with Plan Sierra Leone to boost education in Sierra Leone through the provision of teaching and learning materials,recreational facilities, as well as water and sanitation to ensure access retention and completion of quality primary education especially for the girl child.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the ministry, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Youths and Sports, Mr.Sheku Tanu expressed delighted for receiving the items, while assuring the donors that the ministry will make sure that the items are used for their intended purposes.
