Britain Provides $4.5m
Reports have it that the British Government, through the Department of International Development (DFID), recently provided a non-budget support of financial aid and technical assistance worth $4.5 million, to public sector reform unit. According to reports, the sum of $2.7 million will go towards non budget support and financial aid, and $1.3 million will be used for technical aid. Reports say DFID intends to capacitate support to the government in initiative reforms.
ECOWAS Speaker Visits Salone
The ECOWAS Speaker of Parliament, Hon Mohamed Osman recently arrived in Sierra Leone to strengthen regional integration and cooperation amongst member states. A high powered delegation consisting members of the Sierra Leone Parliament received the important guests at the Lungi International Airport.
Husband Slaps Wife to Death
One Idrissa Kamara of Rogbass village, Tonkolili District, has reportedly slapped his wife Kadiatu Sesay to death. According to reports, it was during an argument when Kamara loses his temper and reportedly slapped Kadiatu who subsequently fell and died. The police are investigating the matter whilst the suspect remains in custody.
Violence Erupts in Kabala
Local tabloids say violence recently erupted in Kabala following the end of the Paramount Chieftaincy Election. According to reports, one of the candidates and his supporters were recently attacked by other supporters. The police are investigating the matter.
Energy Ministry Speaks on ‘Fuel Outburst’
The Ministry of Energy and Water Resource has revealed that the alleged crude oil discovered at the sea view area, Hill Station, Freetown, was contaminated water with diesel. The Sierra Leone Environmental Agency (SLEPA) has reportedly confirmed that the source of contaminated water was an underground fuel storage tank at the Choithram Memorial Hospital, Hill Station. According to reports, the tank developed a leakage and hundreds of gallons of diesel escaped into an underground well.
Sierra Leone Loses $29M in Illegal Fishing
Local tabloids have revealed that Sierra Leone is losing over 29 million dollars in illegal fishing yearly. According to reports, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources is doing her best to address the rampant illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing practices in the country. Reports say many arrests and fines have been made but illegal fishing still continues.
