The Sierra Leone Health Workers’ Union has appealed to President Koroma to double up efforts in improving the deplorable working conditions of health workers in the country.
This appeal was made in a press briefing summoned by the Union on Tuesday 2nd February 2010.
Secretary General of the Union, Mr. Ansu Kalokoh described President Koroma as "a visionary leader who cares for the improvement of the health of the people of this country".
According to him, President Koroma believes that health is wealth, whilst adding that this has been demonstrated in the numerous strides made so far in improving health care delivery.
The decision of the President to appoint the proactive and result-oriented Mohamed D. Koroma as Deputy Minister of the Health and Sanitation Ministry was also lauded by the Secretary General as a step in the right direction.
He then called on the President and the Acting Health and Sanitation Minister to look into the matter of the deplorable working conditions of the country’s health workers, and institute positive actions in that direction.
Meanwhile, several other members of the Union expressed similar sentiments, whilst pointing out that Minister Mohamed Koroma has succeeded in instilling positive changes in the Ministry within this short while, and cited the Minister’s non compromising stances to rid the Ministry of corruption, as a case in point.
At the same briefing the Union outlined several grievances that needed the urgent attention of government. Their grievances include an alleged plan of the government to redundant 25% of health workers.
