More than 240,000 school children will continue receiving daily nutrition males, thanks to an additional contribution of euro 500,000 from the government of Germany in support of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) ongoing school feeding programme in sierra Leone.
“In addition to increasing access to basic education for children in Sierra Leone, the school feeding programme relieves short-term hunger among school-going children, thereby increasing their ability to learn, “said WFP Representative, Ms Christa Rader.
This generous donation will cover the procurement of approximately 800 metric tones of food commodities including cereals, pulses, oil and salt for children in more than 900 schools throughout the districts of kono, kailahun, pujehun, and the Western Area.
“The future of Sierra Leone is in the knowledge and skills of its children. The Government of Germany is pleased to support WFP and the Government of Sierra Leone in providing access to basic education through school feeding,” said Ms Heidi sedleczki, charge’d’ Affairs a.i. at the German Embassy.
WFP Sierra Leone currently supports some 350,000 school children in about 1,200 public schools across the country, almost half of whom are girls.
The Government of Germany is one of WFP’s key donors and has provided a record contribution this year to support the fight against hunger in the world.
