The issue of widespread corruption (Gbashi Gbashi) is still deep-rooted in various government ministries, departments and agencies. For example, the Awareness Times newspaper can authoritatively reveal that some senior health workers have vowed to sabotage and undermine the work of the Acting Minister of Health and Sanitation, Mohamed Daudis Koroma, if the latter continues to probe into their illicit activities.
It has also been unearthed that this attitude of senior health workers has been, and is still serving as a major impediment to the progress of that ministry.
The said workers, including a very senior member of the Procurement Division in the Health and Sanitation Ministry, are making no secret about their grievances against the Acting Minister.
A member of staff of the Awareness Times newspaper quite recently came across this particular senior health officer at an entertainment pub in central Freetown, making sarcastic comments about the Minister, after consuming few bottles of alcohol.
The senior health official scathingly spoke of how disgruntled he was with the minister for the role of the latter in aborting their "Gbashi Gbashi"deals in the ministry. He however vowed that he will stop at nothing to undermine whatever effort the minister undertakes.
The investigation of the Awareness Times also proved that the senior health workers became more frustrating when the minister recently got wind of a shady plan aimed at swindling a World Bank project, which he wasted no time in terminating.
It is also no secret that several workers continue to dodge their official duties since the former Minister was relieved of his duties. "They hardly report for work, and spend most of their time doing nothing even when they report for work," Awareness Times investigation over the past week has revealed
"This is their major problem in this ministry, anytime someone that is not supportive of their corrupt activities is sent here, they will engage in all sorts of plots until that person is fired. That was the same thing they did to former SLPP Minister of Health, Mrs. Agnes Taylor Lewis" disclosed a Secretary in the Ministry, who pleaded for anonymity. It could be recalled that Mr. Mohamed D. Koroma continues to maintain his zero tolerance stance on corruption since he was appointed Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation.
