Following series of articles published by the Awareness Times newspaper, in connection with the detention of compact disc sellers, police at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have yesterday released on bail 15 years old Sheku Kargbo and the Vice President of the Compact Disc Sellers Association (CDSA), Sheku Ojuku Kamara.
The two compact disc sellers were yesterday afternoon released after serving lengthy periods, ranging from five to seven days, in detention.
The 15 years old boy was manhandled and kidnapped by Innocent on Thursday 5th November 2009, and later proceeded to dump him in police cells, whilst Sheku Ojuku Kamara was arrested at his Garrison Street office and detained at the CID Headquarters on Saturday 7th November 2009.
Even though several citizens have yesterday insisted that the police investigative team, headed by one Samuel Kargbo and Sgt Sankoh, must compensate the disc sellers for the unlawful arrests and detentions, the President of the Sierra Leone Traders Union, Gibrilla Kamara aka Gibo was very enthusiastic at settling the matter without further force.
Meanwhile, most of the citizens interviewed yesterday in the central business district of Freetown insisted that Section 17 (4) of the national constitution must be invoked on the police officers. The said Section states thus: "Any person who is unlawfully arrested or detained by any other person shall be entitled to compensation therefore from that other person".
In a brief chat with President Gibo, he assured that the matter would be settled peaceful between the parties concerned. "We did not want any war in the music industry. All we need is peace," the youthful traders’ union president pointed out.
Meanwhile, the pro-APC musician, Innocent, was yesterday spotted parading the four corners of CID with sarcastic comments. On recognizing the investigative journalists from the Awareness Times newspaper, Innocent wasted no time in pronouncing that the only verse he agreed with in Emmerson’s song is where the Publisher of Awareness Times newspaper Dr. Sylvia Blyden was hailed.
"For those of you who are not aware, Sylvia Blyden is my best journalist in Sierra Leone," Innocent opined, adding that "It was the publications written by Sylvia Blyden during the 2007 presidential and parliamentary elections that made the world to recognize me as a star".
He also said that he can become more popular through "bad publicity", especially from the Awareness Times, adding that he always receives telephone calls from all corners of the country and even from overseas whenever Sylvia Blyden publishes materials about him.
He further sarcastically stated that the publications of the Awareness Times were of no threat to his career "because 99% of my fans are illiterates who cannot read nor write".
