ACC Intensifies Sensitization Campaign
The Public Education Department of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has reportedly embarked on a series of awareness raising programmes across the country. Reports say the Commission, in its quest to solicit support in fighting against corruption, has been working in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the public and private sectors, civil society organization and community based organizations. Reports went on that the Acting Head of the Public Education Unit, Koloneh Sankoh has informed that the ACC does not only arrest and jail corrupt individuals but also embarks on public education and sensitization programmes on the dangers of corruption and the benefits of a corrupt free society.
Salone & UNICEF Sign MOU
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Reproductive Health Commodity Security (RHCO) in Sierra Leone. Reports say the said MOU is aimed at securing supply and choice of quality contraceptive and other reproductive health commodities to meet every persons need at the right time and in the right places.
Welfare Minister Suspends Adoption
Reports have it that the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs after a two day workshop on the review of the Anti-Human Trafficking Act 2005. The Minister Dr. Soccoh Kabia is said to have revealed that his ministry has imposed a moratorium on all forms of adoption in Sierra Leone in order to address illegal adoption, trafficking in children, review and reform of the adoption Act of 1989 and streamline the work of the various Government Departments and Non-Government Agencies towards improving Sierra Leone’s image regarding illegal adoption and migration.
Grammar and International Schools Top BECE 2009
Reports have it that the Sierra Leone Grammar School and the International Secondary School in Freetown are the overall champions of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) result. Reports have it that this year’s examination was attempted by 69, 689 pupils across the country and among this figure, Ansu Coomber of the Sierra Leone Grammar School scored a total of seven ones and a two in eight subjects with an aggregate of six, whiles Christyln Williams of the International Secondary School scored aggregate six with a total of seven ones and four in eight subjects.
COMAHS Principal Fired
Reports have it that the Deputy Vice Chancellor or Tutorial Head of the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), Professor Sahr Gevao has been relieved off his duties with immediate effect. Reports say reasons for relieving Prof Gevao of his post has not been made clear, but inside sources allegedly say his tenure of office has ended and is now battling to be re-employed at the blood bank department at the Connaught Hospital in Freetown.
Big Crack in the Army over Promotion
Reports alleged that the relationship between the Minister of Defence and Army General has gone sour over what has been described as controversy in the award of promotions to deserving officers. According to reports, criteria for promotion in the army are clearly outlined in a document titled "Terms of Service of all Ranks of SLAF" which was prepared by the International Military Assistant Training Team (IMATT) for use by the RSLAF based on meritorious performance of serving personnel.
